L'Oreal L'Extraordinaire Liquid Lipstick: the drugstore dupe for the YSL Glossy Stain?

24.2.14

Oh how I love my YSL Glossy Stain.  It's the most beautiful red shade and  leaves a glossy stain (funnily enough) which lasts on the lips for hours.  But I'm getting older, and splashing the cash on every shade of lipstick going just isn't an option for me anymore.  I think I finally have as much sense as money, and at £25 a pop the Glossy Stain just isn't a habit I can afford.  So when I spotted the L'Oreal L'Extraordinaire Liquid Lipstick sitting there on the shelf in Boots looking remarkably similar in premise to the YSL alternative, my heart skipped a beat.

I snapped up shade 600, Nude Vibrato, a lovely peachy pink neutral shade costing £8.99....but how does it weigh up to its considerably more expensive counterpart?

The Glossy Stain has a sweet fragrance which I can't quite put my finger on, whereas the L'Oreal offering smells like watermelon.  I can easily overlook the YSL scent, but the L'Extraordinaire Liquid Lipstick (from now on known as LLL) takes a little more getting used to.  I can imagine it being a turn off for those people who don't like their lip products scented, but I'm happy to report that this fades after a little while on the lips!

The way I apply my Glossy Stain is to apply a thin layer, leave that to set as the 'stain' part, and then whack on another 'glossy' layer over the top.  It's got an almost watery consistency, so this is really easy to do.  Not so with the LLL.  Whilst they feel similar on the lips, LLL is a bit thicker and (dare I say it) stickier, so layering up isn't really an option.  It gives an opaque colour in one swipe though, so this isn't really a problem for me.

One area in which I felt YSL was let down is their shade range.  They have loads of vibrant, statement colours to choose from, but last time I swatched in store I wasn't impressed by their lack of neutral shades.  LLL has a few similar bright offerings (including a gorgeous red, a MAC Show Orchid-esque pink and a vivid orange) but there were also 3 or 4 more nude shades to choose from.

Whilst YSL still has my heart for being a little bit of luxury, from now on I'll be looking to L'Oreal when I fancy a similar product for a fraction of the price!

Have I managed to convince you to give these a go?!
