April 2014's Memory: rock climbing

23.4.14

So we're onto our third memory of the year, and this one's probably been my favourite.  Don't get me wrong, riding bikes in London was a really lovely day out, but I came home feeling on top of the world after this challenge and felt like I'd really achieved something.

I'll be honest, when we turned up on a drizzly Sunday morning and saw only men in the climbing centre, we did turn back around and have to regroup outside to decide if we really wanted to go through with it.  Taking a deep breath we headed back inside to don our harnesses and were, thankfully, greeted by a female instructor.

It sounds silly, but being a wuss in front of a lady helped to keep my pride slightly more in check.  And I was surprised to learn that I was pretty good climbing up...coming back down was more of a problem.  Picture me swinging around for a little bit before eventually giving up and being winced down instead.  And remember how scared I said Zara was?  She was actually really good; much more graceful at the abseiling and managed to get higher than me (due to my fear of having to come back down properly!) on a few of the walls.

In fact, Zara could well be a convert!  On the way out she picked up a leaflet and may or may not go back for more.  It was a fun activity and something that I was surprised to find we genuinely enjoyed.  I think we're both hoping for a less strenuous challenge next month though!

  1. I think I might have to do something like this with Tom. It looks like it was fun!

  3. Was it tough? I always see people do this and they make it look easy but I bet it's actually a lot harder than it looks.

  4. This actually looks like so much fun! I'm not sure if I would wimp out though, I'm not a fan of heights. x
